Theft (or larceny) is considered the taking of someone else’s property without the owner’s consent, and with the intent to temporarily or permanently deprive the owner of that property. The most common forms of theft are petit theft and grand theft. Petit theft involves property or money valued at less than $300. The most common type of petit theft case is commonly known as shoplifting. A petit theft charge is a misdemeanor (punishable by less than one year in jail), unless the person charged has been previously convicted of a petit theft, in which case it is a felony. Grand theft involves stolen┬áproperty or money valued at more than $300, and is a felony.
